So how professional is the massage profession? How do the public discern an unqualified massage therapist from a qualified massage professional? To be quite honest it can be very difficult. I am in my fourteenth year of practice with four years formal study yet the person around the corner who did several weekend courses looks just as qualified. There are short courses giving out diplomas and there are associations now accrediting them. Even some of the large associations have varying levels of accreditation. There are great therapists out there who are very qualified - choose carefully. Find out what association they are with and research the association requirements for the therapy they offer. |

Thinking of a course in massage
It really is a fantastic career and that is speaking with over 14 years experience as a massage therapist. You must choose your college and course carefully. The style of massage you choose as a career must suit your needs such as your physical build but also the market place. Don't learn a style of massage that has no demand in the area you intend to work. |
Visit a Day Spa or Retreat
Beauty Therapy, Facials, Massage, Body Scrubs and Wraps, Foot and Hand Massages, Scalp Massage, the list is endless, and of course Hot Spas. Day Spas and Day Retreats offer an escape from your busy life. For the duration of your treatment your skilled and experienced therapist has only one thing in mind - YOU. |
You need to relax with a massage
There really is nothing like relaxation massage. The art of relaxation in modern society is virtually gone. A relaxation massage allows us the space to get in touch with our quiet self. It is relaxing, pampering and therapuetic all at the same time. A relaxation massage should be given with long flowing strokes to elongate and relax the muscle fibres. |
A massage table is so important for you and your patient
Your massage table or chair is one of the most important items you own as a massage therapist. Not only does your massage table need to be right for you to work with (the table needs to be the right height, width, etc to suit your body shape) it needs to feel comfortable for your patient or client. |
Are your massage towels up to scratch?
If you want to operate a quality massage clinic you must have quality linen. There is nothing worse than making an appointment for a massage, arriving at a clinic or spa and having to lie on or be covered in poor quality towels or sheets. If the therapist does not care enough about their massage linen, how much do they care about other areas of their practice. |

Massage Workshop
Try a massage workshop or short course before you start professional studies. A massage workshop offers the opportunity to learn some basic skills before spending a lot of time and money to take up massage as a professional. Try your skills on family and friends. If you enjoy it, try some more workshops, then choose a course that suits your needs. |

Aromatherapy Massage
Aromatherapy has been around for thousands of years. Many cultures have used and retained aromatherapy because of the known benefits. Aromatherapy massage heals on a physical and emotional level. By combining the healing benefits of aromatherapy oils with therapeutic massage techniques a new level of healing can be achieved. |

Beauty Therapy
Beauty therapy is a necessity far more than a luxury. With the polluted environment we live in, poor diet and increased stress levels we need the treatments that beauty therapy offers. Skin analysis offers an experienced, professional opinion on what treatments and products are appropriate. If you don't get regular beauty treatment you are probably showing off an older you. |

Corporate Massage
Corporate massage can increase productivity well beyond the cost of the massage treatment. Staff feel that the the company cares about them enough to pay for a regular massage. Corporate output increases because staff feel better about themselves and the company. Workplace massage is not a luxury but rather a necessity. Decrease stress - increase productivity.

Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue Massage is not aimed at hurting the client. Pain should not be felt although a level of discomfort should be anticipated. Deep tissue massage uses the superficial tissue to massage the deeper layers. A very good style of massage for chronic stiffness, restricted movements and for sports people wanting to stay at their best. |

Hawaiian Massage
Most forms of massage including Lomi Lomi and Hawaiian massage have an energetic component to them. Theses forms of massage bring you to a very deep state of relaxation that in the modern world we very seldom achieve. In this very deep relaxed state you may experience emotions or feelings that have been suppressed or ignored. |

Hot Stone Massage
Hot Stone Massage also called heated rock massage hit the Australian massage industry very quickly. Hot stone therapy has the advantage of a deep penetrating heat radiating from the hot basalt stones. Heat improves circulation so stone therapy has a great advantage over normal massage. The massage oil is heated as well giving a warm relaxing massage. |

Mobile or In-house Massage
Mobile massage is a great way to get treatment if you can't or don't want to go to a massage clinic. Mobile massage therapists bring the lot to you, massage table, oils and creams, linen and some even bring the music. All you need to do is provide a warm, quiet area to perform the treatment. |

Myofascial Release Therapy
Myofascial Release Therapy has been around for some time. It is sometimes refereed to as emotional release therapy. Many therapists try to bring up the emotion they believe you need to deal with. This is wrong. The therapist uses myofascial stretching and/or sustained myofascial tension to release areas of tension and break down barriers in the myofascial bundles. |

Pregnancy Massage
Pregnancy massage is an important component throughout your pregnancy. The body changes dramatically during pregnancy which can lead to sore legs, lower back pain and related stiffness. Not only does pregnancy masssage help with the physical complaints it allows you a space to relax, get some much needed pampering and personal care. |
Want to be a massage therapist or work in a day spa?
Massage is hard work, very hard work. It is physically demanding and can put a lot of stress on the therapist physically, mentally and emotionally. Very few massage therapists earn a high income. You can only work on one person at a time and clients can only afford to pay so much. Also, you can only do so many in a day or week. Many massage therapists I speak to who are working for a day spa complain of being overworked and poorly paid. There aren't as many jobs as the colleges make out and very few who pass their course survive working for themselves. Sounds a bummer, doesn't it. You can survive and do well, I have been massaging full time for 14 years (now in my own boutique day spa).
