Course and College Thinking of a course in massage
It really is a fantastic career and that is speaking with over 14 years experience as a massage therapist.  You must choose your college and course carefully.  The style of massage you choose as a career must suit your needs such as your physical build but also the market place.  Don't learn a style of massage that has no demand in the area you intend to work.

Massage Colleges and courses offer varying degrees of education to suit your needs. Certificate III and Certificate IV, Diploma and Degree are now available. It is now possible to do a Doctorate in massage. Associations, Health funds and Workcover have minimum requirements for registration so check carefully into the course you are starting.

Remedial Massage is the most popular massage course.  Therapists take a clinical approach to massage therapy. An assessmemt of the complaint is made - patient history, observation, palpation and range of movement - then the soft tissue related to the complaint is massaged and usually stretched. Conditions such as RSI, Frozen Shoulder, sports injuries all fall under the conditions treated by Remedial Massage Therapy.

Nearly all courses offer Relaxation Massage.  In most cases swedish and aromatherapy techniques are combined to relax your body and soothe your mind. . In a peaceful environment with soothing music, your therapist applies long gliding strokes with aromatic oils to your tired muscles. Arrive tired, stressed and pressured - Leave refreshed, restored and at peace.

Aromatherapy courses offer stand alone treatment or aromatic treatments that can be incorporated with other modalities.  Aromatherapists blend essential oils with carrier oils to massage into the body. Ancient and modern combinations are applied to treat various ailments. After consulting with the patient the therapist makes a blend specific to the case and then applies it to the body with appropriate massage therapy techniques.

Sports Massage is becoming more popular all the time.  Sports Massage Therapists not only work on sporting injuries and prevention, they also prepare you for your sporting event and after it. Pre and post event massage is an important part of any athletes routine. Studies show recovery from sports meets and training sessions is reduced when having regular sports massages.

Deep Tissue Massage includes many myofascial techniques and can be similar to sports massage.  Therapists use strong, deep techniques to penetrate the deeper tissues of the body. Scar tissue and muscular adhesions are broken up allowing increased movement and reduction of pain. Deep Tissue Therapists may combine techniques including deep muscle therapy, connective tissue massage and pressure point therapy.

Most Shiatsu courses include several different styles.  Shiatsu which means ‘finger pressure' and is a traditional Japanese therapy that originates from Oriental meridian theory and traditional Japanese massage techniques. The Japanese incorporated Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and used its methods to develop Shiatsu. Several forms have developed including Namokoshi and Zen.

Hawaiian Massage includes Kahuna and Lomi Lomi.  It is given in fluid, rhythmic motion using the forearms as well as the hands. Under body and full body strokes also help to free the energy, make the body soft, promoting free and abundant flow of life energy in the recipient. As with many traditional philosophies energy gets blocked in the joints. .Gentle stretches of the body and gentle rotations of the joints are incorporated to assist the release of tensions and assist the flow of energy, not forcing but feeling the level of the clients resistance or comfort. A very relaxing style of massage.
