It has taken many decades for massage therapy to get the recognition it deserves. For far too long it was associated with sex or considered a poor cousin to other remedial therapies.  Most massage therapists are highly trained individuals comparable to other modalities including chiropractic, acupuncture and physiotherapy.

There are many, many forms of massage available in Australia.  Of the different styles of massage available there are many variations again.  Take Bowen as an example.  A search for Bowen therapy will bring up Bowtech, Myopractic, Autogenic Reflex Technique and several more.  Many are similar in style with some so different it's hard to figure out how they came from Tom Bowen at all, but they are all based on one style.

Massage therapy is taught professionally at many levels the majority at Certificate IV or Diploma.  They are few courses on offer at degree level and they are not required for Workcover or Healthfund accreditation.

When choosing a massage therapist you should always check the credentials of the professional who will be working on you.  They should have an association accreditation, professional indemnity insurance (also called medical malpractice), and most will have healthfund accreditation.  If they don't want to give this information when you enquire, go somewhere else - I would.
